Sabar-perinne eli wolof-kansan perinteiset tanssit ja rytmit ovat vahvasti läsnä erilaisissa juhlissa Senegalissa. Tämä kirja on etnografinen tutkimus sabar-tanssijuhlista, yhteisöllisistä tapahtumista, joissa tanssi ja musiikki ovat ensisijaiset ilmaisukeinot. Sabar-juhlia lähestytään tutkimuksessa esityksinä: ne nähdään sekä sabar-perinteen konstruktioina että erityisinä tiloina, jossa sosiaalisia rooleja ja ihmisten välisiä suhteita ruumiillistetaan performatiivisesti. Tutkimus osoittaa, miten tanssi ja musiikki kietoutuvat toisiinsa sabar-juhlien improvisoidussa vuorovaikutuksessa ja miten sabar-perinteen estetiikka on yhteydessä laajempiin sosio-kulttuurisiin arvoihin. |
